Owl lived in a large Chestnut tree in the middle of the Forest. Upon arriving at his door, Winnie-the-Pooh found that Owl had both a door knocker and a bell-rope. Beneath the door knocker was a sign which read:
"PLES RING IF AN RNSER IS REQIRD". Beneath the bell-pull there was a sign which read: "PLEZ CNOKE IF AN RNSR IS NOT REQID". Clearly needing an answer, but totally unable to read without being told what the words said, Pooh knocked and pulled the door knocker, and he pulled and knocked the bell-rope, and then to make sure, he called out to Owl. "Owl, are you at home?" Owl opened the door. "Welcome Pooh! Please come in." Pooh walked inside and sat down. "What brings you into my neck of Woods, Pooh?" "I am looking for Eeyore's tail. I had hoped you might be able to help," answered Pooh. "By the way, that's an interesting bell-rope you have. I think I've seen it somewhere else before. But I don't know where." "I just came across it in the Forest," explained Owl. "It was hanging over a bush, and I thought at first somebody lived there, so I rang it, and nothing happened, and then I rang it again very loudly, and it came off in my hand, and as nobody seemed to want it, I took it home." "It's very attractive, Owl," said Pooh. "I've seen so many things today that have reminded me of Eeyore's tail." Then in a flash of brilliance that rarely inflicts a Bear of Very Little Brain, Pooh exclaimed, "I know who has Eeyore's tail!" |
"Who?" asked Owl, |
