Freakies

Ralston Purina Freakies
Ralston Cocoa Freakies (1973)
Ralston Purina Fruity Freakies (1975 - 1976)
The Freakies (1971 - 1976) were a group of mutated critters who lived under the abundant Freakies tree and enjoyed eating their cereal. They were created by Jackie End. The original Freakies were named Boss Moss (John Wayne sound-a-like), Grumble, Cowmumble, Hamhose, Snorkeldorf, Gargle, and Goody-Goody. Upon its re-release, the new set of Freakies were Boss Moss, Grumble, Ace, Hot Dog, Hugger, Tooter, and Sweetie. "We are the Freakies... Oh we are the Freakies... And this is our Freakies tree... We never miss a meal... 'Cause we love our ce-re-el".

Burgess Meredith narrated the Freakies TV ads.

Louise Lasser is seen eating Freakies for breakfast in an episode of TV's "Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman", a 1976-1977 syndicated soap opera parody.

Freakies (Space Surfers)

Ralston Freakies
Here is the 11 oz. Hawaiian-shirt wearing, space-surfing Freakies remake from 1987. They wiped out in 1988. It was described as "crunchy honey-tasting spaceships with marshmallow Freakies".

The cast of characters is similar except that Cowmumble was replaced by Sweetie, Goodie-Goodie was regendered and renamed Hotdog, Snorkeldorf was renamed Tooter, Gargle was renamed Ace, and Hamhose was renamed Hugger. Of the seven original Freakies, only Boss Moss and Grumble returned pretty much intact. [Thanks to Troy Drier for his column "The Freakies Conversion" in issue #12 of Freakie Magnet.

King Ayummayumma

Ralston Fruit Islands
Fruit Islands Box
King Ayummayumma and his trusty side-kick Hee Hee (1987). Fruit Islands was a sweetened cereal with real apple bits. "All natural cherry, orange, lemon and other fruit flavors".

There was a chant that went something like this...
We got the fruity new taste
We got the fruit in the new Fruit Islands cereal.
[Something...Something...]
You can say it too...
A-Yumma Yumma

And another that ended something like this...
"...King Ayummayumma make yer tumma go yumma. Ha ha ha!"
With the King himself giving the three guffaws at the end.
The last commercial may have featured King Ayummayumma and Hee Hee lost at sea. It was one of those cliffhanger commercials. As far as we know, they are still helplessly sailing the Pacific Ocean searching for their beloved Fruit Islands.

If you know the rest of the words, please let me know.
